What I wish tutors had instead of another PDF of problems

A tutor’s week is often: here is the chapter, here are ten of the same kind, see you Thursday. The child gets fluent at the kind they just saw. On the test that mixes kinds, they freeze. Fluency was the wrong feeling. You were kind. The test was not. The test was, inconveniently, closer to the world.

What is missing is the moment of choice. Which idea is this. After the first lesson, every worksheet should smuggle in one item from an older idea. The series should not wait until a “final” to mix. Mixing is the practice. A PDF of ten identical problems is a warm-up pretending to be a week.

What the hour is for

The hour you already have is too expensive to spend on blocked fluency. Use it for the mixed page, for the sentence after a correct pick — why not B — and for the drawing from memory when the still is hidden. Being told the why is cheaper. Writing it is the learning. Sketching the pair without the plate is retrieval you can see.

If you tutor six children, use the same lecture at six ages. Do not buy six programs. Sit with the mixed page. That is the hour you were already trying to have. The younger one looks. The older one cannot hide in last week’s heading. You are not a content engine. You are the person who will not accept the glow of recognition as evidence.

A tutor also needs an object that leaves the room. The print pack is that object. The parent who is not you can run the one-day return without a script. The twenty-one-day return does not require you to remember who was where. The library says due. You can spend the paid hour on the part that needs a human.

Self-explanation, not a speech

After a correct pick, one line: in a sentence, why not B. Then the canonical why. That is not a lecture. That is the child noticing the near miss. Tutors already do this in the air. Putting it on the page means it happens when you are not in the air.

Do not narrate the paragraph they can see. If you want sound, make it a pass of its own, or read the spoken line that belongs with the still. Three channels of the same sentences is not support. It is a jam. Your voice, when you are in the room, is a different thing — a parent or a tutor, not a second copy of the text.

Criterion-referenced is the other gift. If they cannot do the idea, they are not finished. A sixty and a green check would let you invoice the hour and move on. It would also leave the joint unfixed. A short targeted loop is less romantic than a new chapter. It is the work.

What not to bring

Do not bring another workbook that is the chapter they just finished, again. Do not bring a platform whose analytics prove they clicked. Do not bring a diagnostic that cannot change the evening. Bring a still that is a question, a mixed item, and a pack that survives the week you have the flu.

You already knew most of this. Tutors knew it before the papers had names. The papers named why blocked practice feels better and works worse, why rereading fools a household, why a mixed item is the real test. We built a product that does not fight you on those points.

The PDF you already have

You already have PDFs. They came from last year’s family, from a publisher, from a well-meaning group. Some of them are fine problems. Almost none of them mix. Almost none of them ask why not B. Almost none of them hide the plate and ask for a sketch. That is why the Thursday test feels unfair. It was the first mixed page of the week.

Replace one sheet, not the whole drawer. After sitting one, smuggle an old item. After a correct pick, the sentence. Once a series, a draw-from-memory. You will feel the hour slow down. Slow is the learning. Fast was the blocked set.

If a parent sits in, ask them not to nod at recognition. Ask them to wait for the mixed item. Parents are used to helping. Helping on a blocked sheet is how a child never meets the choice. Your job, in the room, is to protect the choice.

Six ages is not six PDFs. It is one still and six bars. If you have been buying programs to feel ready, stop. Readiness is the mixed page and a loop when they cannot do it. A new login is not readiness.

Invoice the hour for the part that needed you. Leave the returns to the pack. If a family wants you to “cover more,” cover the joint that failed, not a new chapter that will leak the same way. Covering more is how tutors become content engines. You are not a content engine.

What you needed was never more problems of the same kind. It was the choice, the return, and a picture that would not explain itself. Use those. Let the rest of the PDFs become scrap paper for sketches from memory.

After you close the door

You leave. The family still has three days until the first real return. If you have not left a pack, they will reread a PDF of the same kind, because that is what love looks like in a house that is trying. Leave the pack. Show the parent the date. Tell them recognition is not the goal. Then go.

Your next hour should open on the mixed item, not on a recap speech. Recap speeches are rereading with a witness. The mixed item is the witness.

If they cannot do it, you loop. You do not add a new PDF to feel like progress. Progress is the joint, fixed. A new PDF is a new leak.

If they can do it, you still ask why not B. Correct and unexplained is a coin flip that landed. You are paid to make it not a coin flip.

Keep your own drawer of old hinges, or use ours. After sitting one, smuggle. After sitting two, smuggle two. Do not wait for a mock exam to mix. Mock exams are where tutors discover the week was blocked. Discover it on Tuesday, when there is time.

You did not need another PDF of problems. You needed a still that was a question, a mixed page, a pack that stays when you go, and a bar that does not invoice a sixty as finished. That is the hour. Take it.
